What is Health?

Health is not just the absence of disease โ€” it means complete physical, mental, and social well-being (WHO definition). A healthy person takes care of their body, maintains a positive mindset, and enjoys good relationships with others. Ayurveda also teaches that health is a balance of body, mind, and surroundings through practices like yoga, meditation, and following daily (dinacharya) and seasonal (ritucharya) routines.

How to Stay Healthy

Staying healthy requires a combination of good lifestyle habits and a clean environment. Key habits include eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, limiting screen time, practicing yoga or pranayama, and saying NO to tobacco, alcohol, and drugs. Keeping surroundings clean, breathing fresh air, and drinking clean water are equally important. Even emotions matter โ€” spending time with family and friends keeps our mind healthy.

Diseases: Types and Causes

A disease is a condition that disturbs the normal working of the body or mind. Diseases are broadly of two types: communicable (spread from person to person via pathogens) and non-communicable (linked to lifestyle, diet, or environment and do not spread). Signs are measurable indicators like fever, while symptoms are what a patient feels like pain or tiredness. Non-communicable diseases like diabetes, cancer, and asthma are now the leading cause of death in India.

Immunity, Vaccines, and Antibiotics

The body's natural ability to fight diseases is called immunity, managed by the immune system. Vaccines train the immune system using dead, weakened, or harmless parts of a pathogen so the body can fight that disease in the future โ€” this is called acquired immunity. Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria but do not work against viruses. Overuse of antibiotics leads to antibiotic resistance, where bacteria survive despite treatment, making infections harder to cure.
