Chapter 1 Notes: The Wonderful World of Science

Science is a way of thinking, observing, and doing things to understand the world we live in and to uncover the secrets of the universe. It is like a giant, never-ending jigsaw puzzle — every new discovery adds a piece, and every answer leads to more questions. Science is everywhere, from the kitchen to outer space!

The scientific method is a step-by-step process scientists use to find answers to questions. Here are the steps:

1. Observe something interesting or puzzling.
2. Wonder and Question — ask 'Why?' or 'How?'
3. Guess a possible answer (called a hypothesis).
4. Test the guess through experiments or more observations.
5. Analyse the results to see if the guess was correct.

If the guess is wrong, you make a new guess and test again!

A scientist is anyone who follows the scientific method to solve problems or discover new things. You do not need a lab coat — a cook, a bicycle repair person, or an electrician all use the scientific method in daily life. Science is rarely done alone; scientists across the world work in teams and help each other find answers.
