Exercise Activity 1.12 Qs

Q 1short

Write about a problem in your daily life that you once tried to solve on your own.

Solution

Example Answer: One day, my bicycle tyre looked flat and the cycle was hard to ride. I noticed the tyre was losing air, which made me want to find out where the air was leaking from. This was a simple everyday problem I tried to solve by observing and thinking carefully.

Q 2short

Describe the steps you took to try and solve that problem.

Solution

Example Answer: First, I carefully looked at the tyre to find the source of the air leak. Then I dipped the tyre in water and noticed bubbles forming at a small hole, which told me exactly where the leak was. I took the cycle to a repair shop and got that spot patched, and the tyre held air again. These steps โ€” observing, guessing, testing, and checking โ€” are similar to the scientific method.

Exercise Activity 1.21 Q

Q 1short

Describe a situation from your daily life where you think someone was using the scientific method without realising it.

Solution

Example Answer: A cook noticed that the dal kept spilling out of the pressure cooker. She wondered if too much water was the reason, so she tried adding less water the next time โ€” this was her way of testing her guess. When the dal no longer spilled, she concluded that the water level had been too high. This is a perfect example of the scientific method being used in everyday cooking without the person even knowing it.

Exercise Activity 1.32 Qs

Q 1short

If you could ask 'Why?' about anything around you, what question would you ask?

Solution

Example Answer: I would ask, 'Why do leaves change colour and fall from trees in autumn?' This question interests me because I see it happen every year but I do not fully understand what causes it. Curiosity like this is exactly what drives scientific thinking and discovery.

Q 2short

How would you go about finding the answer to the question you just wrote?

Solution

Example Answer: First, I would carefully observe the trees and note when and how the colour change happens. Then I would make a guess โ€” maybe trees lose leaves to save water and energy during cold months. I would read books, search reliable sources, and talk to my science teacher to check if my guess is correct. Finally, I would analyse all the information I gathered to see if it answers my question.
